When Cliff and I first moved into our house I had big plans to do lots of wallpaper. I watch a lot of HGTV and those designers are always doing accent walls with fabulous wallpaper. Before we even moved in I was visting wallpaper stores and checking out books. I brought all kinds of samples home to Cliff but he could not commit to any of them. First off, wallpaper was more expensive than I had expected. It was going to cost about $400 for 1 accent wall. Plus, my Dad cautioned me that he would not help me take it down in a few years when I inevitably tired of the print or color scheme I selected. I was so discouraged. I really had my heart set on it. Then I saw this post from 4 Men 1 Lady.
I had my answer: Cutting Edge Stencils
I immediately went to the Cutting Edge Stencil website and ordered this stencil and this stencil. Then, they sat in my house for about a month. I was afraid to start. One night I decided to just go for it. Cliff told me to go to the site and watch the video but I was all, “no way, I’m just going to do this.” So, you probably know how that went. I had one little section done (wrong) which sat there for another month before my Dad finally painted over it for me. I knew that this was not a project for Cliff and I to tackle together. I am more of a figure it out as I go along, what ever happens, happens type. He, on the other hand, is a perfectionist. I knew it would be a fight. One night while he was at basketball his Mom came over and helped me out. It took us about 4 hours but we got it done.
And I was in love with my wall. Which cost me about $60 and a little labor. A couple days later we had Cliff’s family over to see our new house and they were very impressed with our accent wall. A few of them didn’t believe that it was paint and not wall paper. Or, that you could paint something like that yourself in a matter of hours. Next thing we knew we were doing the family room, too. That turned out just as good. And soon I was dreaming about all the places I could stencil!
We had one more room we wanted to stencil so we contacted the nice people at Cutting Edge Stencils to see if they would let us do a review and giveaway in exchange for another stencil. Lucky us (and you), they agreed! This time I ordered this stencil. I’ll show you that finished product later! Needless to say, I am obsessed with stencils. My next project is going to be stenciling either curtains or a canvas. I can’t decide.
Note: In both rooms the base coat on the wall is white and the stencil is done in metallic silver by Martha Stewart. I used 2 of these 10 oz jars for each wall.
Tips:
1. Watch the video!
2. Order the Clip-On Stencil Level. Makes life much easier.
3. It is only paint, don’t be afraid to do something really bold!
